Extracurricular Opportunities

At Kings’ School Al Barsha, we offer an extensive enrichment programme of extracurricular opportunities for children from FS1 through to Year 13. These take place before, during, and after school on a weekly basis and provide opportunities for students to discover new talents and abilities, to nurture existing passions, and to develop their social skills. Activities change termly in line with student interests and sporting seasons, and cover everything from academics and the arts to sports and cultural opportunities.

Parents can check our online ECA platform SOCS to confirm which opportunities their child/ren have been booked onto. Activities will commence week beginning Monday 18 September. 

Guitar Club

A guitar club is an excellent way for guitar enthusiasts to come together, improve their skills, and share their passion for music. It offers a supportive and creative environment for individuals to learn, play, and connect with others who share their love for the guitar. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced player, a guitar club can be a fun and enriching extracurricular activity.

InBestigators

InBestigators is a space that brings out the best in your critical thinking and problem-solving skills. You will explore your own as well as each other's prior knowledge and work collaboratively to set out a method to test your proposed explanation for a scientific phenomenon. These sessions are completely student-led, making your learning fun by giving you creative freedom and empowering you to have control over your own learning.

Kai was a recent newcomer to InBestigators and thoroughly enjoyed leading on and delivering his first session.

The art of medicine is ever-evolving, yet at its core remains a deeply rooted passion for science and its fascinating ability to heal.

The Kings’ Medical Society aims to cultivate curiosity, discussion, and excitement in students who might be interested in medicine whilst also supporting those who are serious about considering a career in the field, providing them with valuable knowledge and skills to get there.

You will have the opportunity to explore the many exciting facets of medicine, everything from anatomical systems, all the way to the different pathways into a medical career. Whether it be diving deeper into discussions and debates around medical discoveries and the latest developments in the field, or bolstering your interests in Chemistry and Biology, there will definitely be something for you in our medical society.

Architecture Society

Architecture Society is a student-led initiative that provides the opportunity for people to meet and explore their passion for architecture. Architecture is a step towards the future; at the same time, it is also a representation of culture, heritage, and the way we view the world. Through exploring design and innovation, we will work together to create new design concepts and explore emerging trends and developments in the field of architecture.

The Society will help those of you who are potentially interested in architecture or interior design to develop relevant skills and knowledge. You will engage in a range of different activities, from discussions and debates about recent developments in the architecture world to developing designs that could be used to build an architecture portfolio, to workshops focused on useful software like the 3D modeling programme, SketchUp. In addition, it will give you an experience of leading and collaborating with other like-minded individuals.

The Politics Society unites students with an interest in political current affairs, open discussion and debate. Politics Society will allow you to acquire new academic skills and gain a passion in politics and keep up with updated views and current affairs such as human rights injustices and controversial legislation that has been passed. The skills acquired in this society such as public speaking, leadership, communication and political neutrality will allow you to both implement and utilise them in your aspirational careers. Our weekly meetings embody the structure similar to that of a university seminar, in which all members of the society are encouraged to voice their opinions on our chosen subject and contribute to debates and open discussions. The Politics Society gives its members the opportunity to elevate their passions and interests through engaging and communicating about their academic interest with like minded members, and the opportunity to challenge others.

As our senior members of the student body enter Sixth Form, it is ardent that those with interests in careers in Law and History are given the resources and opportunities to explore their futures.

The Senior Law Society mirrors that of a university seminar, preparing you through controversial judicial issues. From whether prisoners should be given the right to vote to the ethicality of repealing Roe vs Wade in a progressive society, you will both research and debate to explore your own passions and future careers in Law. However, the law society is not limited to those who wish to pursue Law but rather is right for anyone with an interest in the humanities. The skills enhanced outside of the classroom environment remain transferable to all walks of life, setting you up for a prepared and successful university experience.

The Engineering Society allows like-minded students who are considering pursuing a career in engineering to come together and develop a greater understanding of this field. You will research, present, debate, take part in and lead competitions, liaising with industry professionals. You will be presented with competitions and engineering challenges that help expand your problem-solving skills, which in turn will hopefully fuel a passion for engineering.

The average person is predicted to change their career three times in their life, and being well-informed about the different fields such as Chemical, Mechanical, Aeronautical, and more, that engineering encompasses; will allow you to make more well-informed decisions in the future. Due to how vast the scope of engineering is, by partaking in the Society you will accumulate a comprehensive view of each field prior to having to make important decisions such as choosing A-level subjects and even professions later on in life.

Maths and Economics are at the forefront of today’s day and age. Ranging from making everyday decisions, such as what brand of candy to buy, to large-scale government decisions, such as which sector to invest in. Understanding how economics and maths are applied in the real world will tremendously develop your perspective and viewpoints in the long term.

In the Maths and Economics Society, you will have the opportunity to go beyond the curriculum, engage with like-minded individuals, and explore these subjects in-depth, allowing you to gain an insight into what they might entail in further education. Examples of topics we've covered include the economics behind digital currencies and the stock market, as well as matrix algebra for analyzing big data. Moreover, you will experience a mixture of seminar-style lessons as well as debates and quizzes, where we cover interesting and niche concepts within these fields.

Lego Robotics

Robotics and programming are the way of the future. In this opportunity, you will learn how to work as a team to complete a research project, build a robot and program it to complete a series of tasks on a mission board. You will then go to a national competition where you will present your project to judges and compete against other schools in a robot game.

This is a great opportunity for you to improve your problem-solving skills and learn how to program by having fun. Problem-solving and computational skills are important for Computing and all other subjects.

Cuisine Masters

Cuisine Masters will give you the opportunity to explore the diverse and exciting cuisines that the world has to offer! It will provide you with the opportunity to practice, improve and test your practical cooking skills and knowledge. Each week you will visit a new country and its exciting cuisine and then get to work on making a fabulous dish that you can take home to share with family and friends. Each week these dishes will allow you to demonstrate a wide range of skills including hob management, knife skills, sauce making, baking, and food presentation. Cuisine Masters is open to all with a love of cooking.

This opportunity content is repeated each term so students are advised not to re-book for a second term if they have already participated.

Procreate Digital Art

Procreate Club will give you the opportunity to explore using Procreate as a powerful tool for creating digital art and illustrations. You will practice using functions such as working on different layers; using the colour harmony tool to choose effective colour palettes for their art, and using the select and transform tools to manipulate and edit specific areas of a drawing. You will also learn how to take an initial idea and develop this in-depth using visual research and design drafts, helping them to create more successful digital artwork.

Requirements:
You must have an iPad with Procreate installed in order to access the activity. Ideally, they should also have a stylus.
